Supporting education, care and protection.
The Hound & Wildlife Habitat & Welfare Fund is a 50l(c)3 non-profit corporation organized by the Rocky Fork Headley Hunt for charitable, scientific and educational purposes, including the care of retired sporting foxhounds, the protection of wildlife habitats through land conservation, and educating the public about the importance of foxhunting to the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
Our Mission
To provide for the ongoing health and welfare of retired hunting foxhounds
To educate our community about foxhunting and other sporting-dog activities
To encourage the preservation of open space
To raise funds through events, grants, and charitable contributions necessary to meet these goals.
Retired Hound Care
The lifespan of a working foxhound is approximately 12 to 13 years. They actively hunt from approximately the age of two through eight and then are retired.
Most retired hounds enter a re-homing program through their hunt organizations and most will be adopted out to qualified new owners, living out the rest of their lives as companion animals with their new "pack" of humans. Hounds that may not adapt well to life outside their original pack remain at the hunting kennel as honored retirees.
Foxhunting, Sporting Dogs, Conservation
Foxhunting and other sporting-dog pursuits, including duck and bird hunting and performance trials, take place on open land where conservation of habitat is crucial to maintaining sport, as is protecting game from unregulated harvesting including trapping, poisoning and poaching.
The HWHWF is committed to building alliances with landowners, other sporting-dog organizations, game conservation and habitat management groups in order to:
Educate the public about the benefits of allowing foxhunting and other sporting-dog events to take place on their property
Open dialogue with landowners regarding habitat and land conservation strategies
Offer landowners information on conservation strategies, such as management agreements, estate planning and donation of conservation easements
Co-cultivate and share common lands in the pursuit of our sport and to maximize wildlife habitat preservation and conservation , efforts on those lands
